Popular Kogi political strategist, Chief Sunday Abuh, has survived another assassination attack few weeks after he announced his switch to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 General Election in Nigeria.
SPY Reporters gathered that Abuh was trailed by some yet to identified assailants on his way to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital after attending a political function in Makurdi, Benue state.
The ugly incidence occurred on Friday, 23rd September at about 7:50pm along Makurdi โ Lafia Expressway when some heavily armed men who were trailing him opened fire on the White Toyota Camry he was driving.
Unfortunately, one of his political associates, Itodo Enemali, who occupied the front passenger seat sustained gunshots injuries.
Narrating his ordeal to SPY REPORTERS in an emotion laden voice, Abuh said “I noticed a Black Prado Jeep was trailing us shortly after we left Makurdi. I had mixed feelings traveling at that odd hour but I did not have any option because I received a suspicious phone call from an unknown number earlier the previous day threatening to deal with me.
The caller dialed my phone using the private number setting. I became curious and at the same time very careful because this is the second time I will receive such threat and it does not always end well.
“I advised my friend who is presently recuperating in the hospital that we need to leave Makurdi immediately after the function. Initially, when we left the venue, it was my friend who drove the car but we swapped and I took over the wheels after refuelling at Lafia. I bet this was my saving grace.
“Few minutes after we navigated the expressway to continue our trip, I noticed the same Prado Jeep trailing us from a distance and it was already dark. I wasn’t comfortable. However, I was careful.
“I was driving in fear and praying to see any police checkpoint but it was difficult because it’s was raining heavily with zero security presence. At some point, I slowed down due to poor visibility and within a twinkle of an eye, my assailants overtook our car from the passenger side at the same time shooting sporadically into the air.
“I lost control and drove into the bush. Immediately, I heard the loud groan of my friend shouting my name saying he has been shot. They thought I was the one and fled the scene. This is the second attempt on my life just within a space of two months,” he explained.
When asked what he thinks is his offence to warrant illegal manhunt by his attackers, Abuh said it is the handiwork of his political enemies.
“My only offence is because I decamped from my former party. Please, I didn’t mention any party, I only said my former party. They don’t want anything good in our state but we must get it right”.
Abuh further explained how he is yet to recover from the shock as he is now living in perpetual fear of the unknown. Pitifully, he said he wished to retire from politics at least to save his life from untimely death.
Recall that the politician cum philanthropist was attacked by yet to be identified gunmen sometime in July.
Suspected assailants had crept into his residence located in Otukpa, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue state.
According to sources, he narrowly escaped but his aged parents who came visiting were not lucky as they were kidnapped and later found dead after paying heavy ransom to the abductors.
Few days after the ugly incidence, his house was razed down including two of his cars parked in his garage containing his laptop and mobile phones.
As at the time of filing this report, Abuh said his immediate family members has fled into safety but he refused disclosing their location due to security reasons.
The issue of insecurity has been on the rise in Nigeria and particularly Benue state where the Governor, Samuel Ortom is reputed in his penchant accusation of “Fulani herdsmen” as prime suspects.
